QUANTUM
Quantum has been in the data storage business since 1980. It started in the hard drive market and was very succesful. It then purchased DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) Storage Division in 1994 which included the DLT or TK tape technology. This allowed Quantum to further develop the technology through to Super DLT and DLT S4. In 1998 it purchased ATL, a tape library manufacturer to enhance its position in the tape backup and archive market. In 2001, Quantum sold the hard drive division to Maxtor and purchased M4 Data to concentrate on tape drive technology. In 2002 Quantum, purchased Benchmark Storage Innovations acquiring the VStape technology. In 2005, Quantum purchased Certance from Seagate to position itself as one of the three members of the LTO Consortium (HP, IBM and Quantum), the developers and owners of the LTO Ultrium technology. Finally, Quantum purchased ADIC a library manufacturer and competitor in 2006 positioning itself as a major player in tape library, tape drive and tape technology.
