The Imation Ultrium LTO 5 tape has a new technology where the tape can be encrypted as with LTO 4 tapes, and only LTO 5 can be 'partitioned' into 2 writeable areas on the tape. Some companies will be releasing and LTO 5 WORM (Write Once Read Many) tape as was done with LTO 3 and LTO 4.
LTO stands for Linear Tape Open and was developed by the LTO Consortium. The LTO Consortium was initially made up of IBM, HP and Seagate (later renamed Certance). Quantum bought the rights to Seagate (Certance) and is now part of the consortium. They set the standards for future development of the LTO family.
