LTO7 M8, LTO Ultrium 7 M8 Data Cartridges

The LTO7 M8 tape cartridge, or LTO Ultrium7 M8 Data Cartridge (specially labelled 'LTO7 data cartridge'), holds up to 9TB of native, uncompressed data and up to 22.5TB of compressed data. The LTO 7 M8 cartridge has a native write speed of 360 MB/sec and a compressed write speed of up to 900 MB/sec. The LTO7 M8 tape cartridge is, in fact, a new LTO7 cartridge with a special barcode label applied to allow it to be used in an LTO8 tape library drive, offering higher capacity and speed. The LTO7 M8 tape is not pre-initialised. Therefore, the LTO8 drive and tape library must have the latest firmware and microcode, and the tape must be unused/new with the correct M8 barcode. The LTO8 drive in the tape library will initialise it as an LTO7 M8 tape, with higher capacity and speed than the LTO7 tape it was originally. This will not work with previously used LTO7 tapes or with LTO8 drives that do not have the latest firmware installed. Always check with your manufacturer to ensure your LTO8 drive or library is compatible with pre-initialising LTO7 M8 tapes!
